Global Water Operators' Partnerships Alliance

The origin of GWOPA

GWOPA was created as part of a set of recommendations made to accelerate MDG process.

In 2006, the United Nations Secretary General Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB), recommended WOPs as a cost-effective and timely solution to current challenges. Stressing the importance of sharing knowledge on a non-profit basis, in their Hashimoto Action Plan they called for the creation of a global centre to gather the political, financial and technical support to make Water Operators' Partnerships a more effective and systematic way of building capacity for utilities.

UN-Habitat led the creation of this global mechanism upon request by the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan. After the launch of the initiative in August 2007 in Stockholm, the Global Water Operators' Partnerships Alliance was formally constituted in Nairobi in January 2009 with the formation of a broad-based Steering Committee, and the adoption of its guiding principles.
